Coping, Tile and new plaster

At first glance, the pool still functions, but once you get closer, you can really see the age showing. The plaster is worn and discolored, especially on the tanning ledge and shallow areas. There are visible stains, uneven coloration, and surface wear that comes from years of use. The tile line is dated, and the coping has started to show its age as well, both visually and structurally.

This is the kind of project where nothing is necessarily “failed,” but everything is ready to be brought up to a modern standard.

Step one:

Identify the work to be done

The customer wanted to remove all of the existing flagstone coping and wall coverings around the pool. Over time, flagstone can begin to chip, crack, and flake due to age, exposure to pool chemicals, changing weather conditions, and everyday use. These loose pieces can fall into the pool, potentially causing stains, placing additional stress on the pool system, and creating an uncomfortable or unsafe surface for swimmers to walk on.

You can also see that the existing plaster had become stained and discolored, giving the pool an aged appearance. As part of the renovation, the customer also chose to replace the outdated brown tile to give the pool a cleaner and more modern look.

Step Two:

Drain the pool and remove the existing coping, tile, and damaged plaster.

Once the pool was fully drained, our team began carefully removing the old coping, waterline tile, and the top portion of the plaster around the perimeter of the pool. Removing the upper section of plaster helps create a clean and secure surface for the new materials to properly bond to during installation.

At this stage of the renovation, the pool begins to reveal the underlying structure and condition beneath the old finishes. This process also allows us to inspect for hidden issues that may have developed over time, helping ensure the new tile, coping, and plaster are installed on a solid foundation built to last.

Step Three:

Install the new finishes and bring the pool back to life.

With the old materials removed and the surface properly prepared, it was time to completely transform the look of the pool. The customer chose beautiful new travertine coping to replace the aging flagstone, giving the pool a cleaner and more modern appearance while also providing a durable surface designed to hold up well over time.

To enhance the raised wall and create more visual texture, we installed split face stone across the entire feature wall area. The combination of the natural stone textures, updated coping, and new waterline tile helped give the pool a much more refined and upscale look.

The pool was then finished with a rich blue plaster and matching blue waterline tile to brighten the water color and give the entire backyard a fresh, vibrant feel. The final result completely changed the appearance of the pool, creating a cleaner, brighter, and more inviting outdoor space for the homeowners to enjoy.

You can see this pool was dealing with a combination of green algae and yellow algae, also known as mustard algae. Green algae is usually the first sign that the water chemistry has fallen out of balance, turning the water cloudy and giving surfaces a slippery feel. The yellow algae is a bit more stubborn and tends to cling to walls and shaded areas, often coming back if it is not treated thoroughly.

In this case, the buildup showed that the pool needed more than just routine cleaning. It required proper chemical treatment, brushing, and filtration to fully eliminate the algae and restore clear, healthy water.

From Dated to Modern:

A Complete Pool Remodel Transformation

Many pools built years ago still have solid structures, but their design and equipment can begin to show their age. That was exactly the case with this project. The pool originally featured red brick decking and coping, a style that was popular at the time but no longer aligned with today’s modern outdoor living designs. Along with the outdated appearance, the pool was also running on older equipment that had become less efficient and more difficult to maintain.

The homeowner wanted to breathe new life into their backyard while keeping the existing layout of the pool. Their goal was a full refresh that would modernize the look, improve performance, and add features that would make the pool more enjoyable for relaxing and entertaining.

Updating the Look

The first step in the transformation was removing the old red brick decking and coping. While it had served its purpose for many years, it gave the pool a darker and more dated appearance. In its place, we installed a light, natural stone finish. This change alone dramatically brightened the space and gave the pool a clean, modern feel that fits much better with contemporary outdoor design.

The lighter tones also reflect more sunlight, making the entire pool area feel more open and inviting.

Adding a Tanning Ledge

One of the most exciting additions to this remodel was a new in-water tanning ledge . This shallow area is designed for relaxing in the water while still enjoying the sun. Tanning ledges have become one of the most popular features in modern pools because they create a comfortable place to lounge, place chairs, or simply cool off without fully swimming.

By incorporating the tanning ledge into the existing pool layout, we were able to add a luxurious and functional feature without requiring a full pool rebuild.

Elevating the Design with Travertine Stone

A major part of the transformation involved upgrading the materials surrounding the pool. To achieve a clean, cohesive, and timeless look, we installed travertine stone on the pool coping, retaining wall, and patio area .

Travertine is one of the most popular materials used in modern pool construction because of its natural beauty and durability. Unlike the darker brick that previously surrounded the pool, the travertine provides a lighter, more elegant appearance that complements the water and reflects sunlight, helping the space feel brighter and more open.

Beyond its visual appeal, travertine is also extremely practical for pool environments. The stone stays cooler underfoot in the Texas sun, making it comfortable to walk on even during the hottest summer days. It also provides a naturally textured surface that offers better slip resistance around wet areas.

By carrying the travertine across the coping, retaining wall, and patio , the entire outdoor space now feels unified and intentional. Instead of separate elements competing visually, the pool area flows together as a single modern outdoor living space.

The result is a polished, resort-style finish that not only enhances the look of the pool but also adds long-term durability and value to the backyard.
